Salsa, Bachata

marc@dancentervn.com

Marc was 21 years old, attending UCLA in 2011 and focused on Philosophy major, but he unofficially minored in Salsa and Bachata dancing! A few nights on campus turned into 3 to 5 nights a week.
After experiencing his first Afro-Cuban folklore class, Marc’s world was turned upside down. He felt like he had never experienced anything like it before: undulating and bouncing and stomping and striking.
An ensemble of 3 batá percussionists and singers were stationed in the corner, giving the class tempo, rhythm, melody — which they were intended to translate into physical form!
Marc left class feeling lighter than ever, in mind, body, and spirit.

Currently Marc is studying Afro-Cuban Folklore, including Rumba Guaguanco, Yoruba Orishas, and Palo Congo.
In 2016 he entered and won his first Bachata competition in Hanoi, Vietnam. The next year in Singapore he won the annual “Jack and Jill” Social dancing competition (Singapore Bachata Weekend 2017).

Marc is now based in Saigon, teaching Salsa, Bachata, and Kizomba.

« I would also like to reiterate that dancing (Salsa or otherwise) is a physical tradition, a communal ritual that is passed down not through books or word of mouth, but by movement and music. Salsa is kept alive and belongs to all who take part. Let us begin! »
